Arla Foods

Arla Foods is a dairy cooperative, annually collecting ~14 bn kg of milk from our farmer owners making Arla the world’s 6th largest dairy company. Our global brands include Arla®, Lurpak® and Puck®. It is our vision to create the future of dairy, to bring healthy and sustainable dairy products to people across the world and to lead the transition towards sustainable dairy farming and production.

Arla Foods is a European-based dairy cooperative, owned by 8,500 farmers from 7 European countries who between them look after over 1.5 million cows.

Our cooperative roots go all the way back to the 1880s and we are committed to making natural nutritious food and drink more accessible to consumers around the world.

We recognize that as is the case for all food production, dairy comes with a carbon cost. As a cooperative, we have responsibility for the full value chain, and we have committed to carbon net zero dairy by 2050. On the road to net zero emissions, we are committed to reducing CO2e emissions significantly by 2030:

63% reduction in production, owned logistics and energy usage

30% reduction on farms and of emissions from sourced whey, 3rd party logistics and packaging

These plans are approved by the Science Based Target initiative as being consistent with reductions required to keep global warming to 1.5 degree.

In the Middle East sustainable development is an engrained part of our strategy, the following being tangible examples to our commitment

  • The UAE fleet of trucks operates on biodiesel saving 90,000 kg CO2e annually.
  • Our production site in Bahrain operates the country’s largest solar power plant, saving 20% of the site’s total energy consumption.
  • More than 99% of our product packaging in MENA is designed for recyclability.

More than ever we need companies to stand up and lead the transformation of their industries. At Arla, we will be a leader in transforming the dairy industry from the farm up and our people and owners are fully focused on making the changes that need to be made throughout our value chain to become a sustainable and carbon net zero dairy company.
